Paifala - Pineapple Pies a Popular Samoan Dessert

Today some of the students at Meadowbank School took part in baking a popular Samoan pie called 'Paifala' or Pineapple Pie.  Some students compared it to looking like samosas, dumplings or a lemon meringue only with pineapple.

It was a hit with students and the staff!!

Here's the recipe if you would like to try it at home with your family.

Pai Fala (Pineapple Pie)

This recipe will make 2 large pastries.
Ingredients:
Pie crust:
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder
50 grams of soft butter
About 300 gm of coconut milk
Filling:
1 440gm tin of crushed pineapple in natural juice
1 heaped tablespoon of custard powder
2-3 tablespoons of sugar

Method:
For the Filling
Pour the crushed pineapple into a sieve that is placed over a bowl.
Gently press onto it with the back of a spoon to extract the juice.
Mix the custard powder and the sugar into the juice.
Microwave 1 minute in a microwave safe bowl/jug. Then stir.
Microwave 1 further minute. It should have thickened. If not, microwave for a few more seconds.
Add the crushed pineapple, then leave the filling to cool
For the pie crust:
Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl
Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips.
Add enough coconut milk (about 300gm) to make a scone like dough
Mix only enough until it holds together (do not over mix as it will become tough)
Divide into two halves.
Roll each out on a floured surface, lift over a dinner plate and trim the surface.
Spoon pineapple filling onto half of it, and flip over.
Carefully pinch the two edges together and then make a pattern with the prongs of a fork.
Prick a few holes into the top.
Lift the Pai Fala onto an oven tray and bake 15-20 minutes at 170 degrees C until golden brown.
Sieve icing sugar over the top, or sprinkle with a mixture of brown sugar and icing sugar. Let it cool a little before serving.

AUTSA Dance Group - Samoan Language Week 2015

AUTSSA Dance Group

On a cold morning on Monday 25th May we went to the hall to watch a Samoan dance group perform on stage.

First we waited until everybody was quiet so they could start. When everybody was quiet they did the National Anthem in Samoan with the help of some people from the Pacific dance group.

Next Jake (from the AUTSSA dance group) taught us some commands in Samoan for example, One clap, Two claps, Rub hands together, Three claps with flat hands the same way then three claps with curved hands two ways then one way together, Hands on the ground and head down, Hands on knees and head up, If he said He He you would say Ho and some others.

After that the boys and girls did a dance. The first bit of the dance was the boys slowly moved forward to give the girls a pretty pink flower (and the girls all got one there was five girls in total). The next bit was the boys swiftly moved back to the back of the stage.

Then they all sang a lovely peaceful song in Samoan. The boys then did a lovely dance together.

Next the girls went to a corner of the stage but the boys stayed to do their Samoan dance. The boys dance looked like the had practised a lot by themselves.

After that the girls came back on and did another dance together. It looked really nice together (they looked even better together).

Then a small man did a beat while the boys and girls did a dance that was kind of like a beat. It was nearly coming to the end. At the end they just said Tofa (which means goodbye in Samoan).

Harakeke Funk Song by Room 19

Over the past week Room 19 were very busy preparing for the assembly item this week. The video is one of the items the class performed at the assembly. We used a popular song for our backing track and came up with lyrics that tied into our learning at school. The class worked hard to come up with words, it wasn't an easy task trying to fit words within the rhythm and beat of the music. It was definitely a big learning process! We hope you enjoy our video.

Science Week - Luke's Experiment

This week was Science Week.  Mrs Carryer organised the 'Science in a Van' show earlier this week and organised Lunchtime Science Lab experiments for the Seniors.  Teachers also did experiments with their classes.  Room 19 enjoyed doing 'Bubble Potions' and 'Acids and Bases' in class.

For homework students had to record or take photos of themselves doing an experiment.

Here is Luke's video of his experiment he did at home.

How did you celebrate Science Week at your school?
